Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy Degree program offered by the Computer Science department at Kansas State University is a research-oriented curriculum designed to prepare students for advanced research and University-level academic positions in the computing field.

Admission Requirements

A qualified candidate for admission to the Ph.D. program will have a Master's degree in computer science or a Bachelor's degree plus strong, advanced computing knowledge. Solid preparation in theoretical computer science and advanced knowledge in one or more applications areas (compiling, operating systems, database systems, etc.) are also required.

An applicant must take the GRE general exam. Minimum GRE score requirements are:

  • 146 Verbal
  • 151 Quantitative
  • 4.5 Analytical Writing (3.5 for non-native English speaking students)

English Proficiency Exam is required for an international student whose native tongue is not English. The following are the minimum score requirements:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) total score of 575
  • TOEFL iBT total score of 90 and at least 20 on each section
  • IELTS: total score of 7 and at least 6.5 in each section

The following materials will need to be scanned and included in your online application:

  • Transcripts (bachelor's and master's if applicable)
  • GRE score
  • TOEFL or IELTS (English proficiency) scores, if international
  • Affidavit of Financial Support, if international
  • Description of work experience, one page maximum
  • Three letters of reference (will be submitted directly by recommenders)

CS Ph.D. Fellowship Program

We are happy to announce the PhD Fellowship Program for Fall 2016!
PhD Fellows will be selected based on demonstrated academic achievements and exceptional promise for successful research careers in computer science. Fellowships will include both teaching and/or research duties in areas selected by the candidates at the time of application. Faculty research areas include bioinformatics, computer and information security, distributed algorithms & systems, formal approaches to computation, machine learning and data mining, multiagent systems and cooperative robotics, operating systems, real-time systems, scientific computing, information retrieval, sensor networks, and software engineering.

Eligibility: Both domestic and international PhD applicants are eligible for the PhD Fellowships. Under-represented groups, including women and minorities, are strongly encouraged to apply. To be considered for the fellowship program, please indicate your interest by selecting the "fellowship" option on the online application.

The application deadline is January 8th, and early applications are encouraged.

Degree Requirements

A total of 90 credits of graduate coursework is required for the Ph.D. degree; a Master's degree counts for 30 of these credits, and approximately 24 course credits beyond the M.S. are also needed. The remaining credits are dissertation research. In addition to coursework requirements, the following major milestones must be met:

  • Completing the Breadth Requirement and passing the Research Proficiency Exam (Preliminary Examination).
  • Successfully presenting a research plan to one's supervisory committee at a research proposal meeting.
  • Completing the research plan, writing a dissertation, and successfully defending the dissertation at a final exam.
