CIS Tracks

The undergraduate curricula in the CIS Department each contain more than 20 hours of unrestricted electives. This document is intended to give students some guidance for how they might use some or all of these unrestricted electives, as well as natural science, humanities, social science, and technical electives, to complete an undergraduate degree in a way that fits their individual needs. Minor in Another Field

The disciplines of Computer Science and Information Systems are well-suited to interdisciplinary study due to their applications to other disciplines. For example, Scientific Computing has emerged as a subdiscipline of Computer Science. A minor in a scientific field, together with appropriate computing and mathematics classes, could be used to obtain an education in this sub-discipline. Furthermore, disciplines such as foreign languages or other humanities can complement a technical discipline by helping graduates to work more effectively with people of other nationalities and cultures. In order to support such interdisciplinary study, many departments at KSU offer minors. Below are some examples of how minors can be incorporated into a BS degree program in either Computer Science or Information Systems without exceeding 124 total credit hours.

Biology Minor with CS Degree

  • Natural sciences requirement: BIOL 198, 201, 5 additional BIOL hours including a lab (14 hours total)
  • Unrestricted electives: 7 hours of BIOL – at least 8 hours of BIOL must be 400-level or above (7 hours)
  • A good technical elective for this minor would be MATH 655 (3 hours)
  • Good additional unrestricted electives would be MATH 222 and EECE 571 (4 hours total).

Business Minor with IS Degree

  • Technical Electives: MANGT 420, MKTG 400 (6 hours total)
  • Statistics: Substitute STAT 350 for STAT 325
  • Unrestricted electives: ACCTG 241, FINAN 450, ECON 120 (9 hours total)

Chemistry Minor with CS Degree

  • Natural sciences requirement: CHM 210, 230, PHYS 113, 2 hours of PHYS 114 (14 hours total)
  • Unrestricted electives: CHM 371, 350, 351, 500, 2 hours of PHYS 114 (14 hours total)
  • A good technical elective to complement this minor would be MATH 655.
  • Additional unrestricted electives to complement this minor could include CHE 320 and 416, along with MATH 222 (10 additional hours). This would require 3 additional credit hours beyond 124.

Modern Languages Minor with Any CIS Degree

The Department of Modern Languages offers minors in French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. These minors consist of 18-20 hours, depending on the language. Some of these hours can be applied toward Humanities/Social Science electives, depending on the language and the CIS degree program.

Physics Minor with CS Degree

  • Natural sciences requirement: (PHYS 213 or 223), (PHYS 214 or 224) (10 hours total – still need UGE science course)
  • Unrestricted electives: PHYS 325, a course with PHYS 325 as a prerequisite (PHYS 506 would be a good one), MATH 222 (11-13 hours)
  • A good technical elective to complement this minor would be MATH 655

Double Major

Students wishing to pursue interdisciplinary study in more depth may wish to complete a double major. A double major requires students to fulfill the degree requirements of both programs. In many cases, these requirements would include more than 124 hours; however, we give here one example of a double major that can be completed without additional credit hours.

Double Major in Math and Computer Science

  • Technical elective: MATH 655 (3 hours)
  • Unrestricted electives: MATH 222, 240, 506, 512, 633, and one other MATH course at the 500-level or above, excluding MATH 551 and 510 (20 hours total)
  • Humanities and social sciences must be chosen to satisfy both majors

Other Interdisciplinary Study

Some students may wish to pursue interdisciplinary study without a minor or a double-major. Such a pursuit would be appropriate, for example, for students wishing to study in a department that does not offer a minor, but not wishing to pursue a double major. We list here some examples of how this might be done.

Bioinformatics with CS Degree

  • Technical electives: CIS 530 or 730; 734 (6 hours total)
  • Natural sciences: BIOL 198, 450, CHM 210, 2 hours of CHM 230 (14 hours total)
  • Unrestricted electives: 2 hours of CHM 230, BIOL 620, EECE 571, MATH 222 (10 hours total)
  • CS Theory (for CS Option) or Technical elective (for SE Option): CIS 575

Artificial Intelligence with CS Degree

  • Technical Electives: CIS 530, 732 (6 hours total)
  • Theory (for CS Option) or additional unrestricted elective (for SE Option): CIS 575 (3 hours)
  • Humanities/Social Sciences: PSYCH 110 (3 hours)
  • Unrestricted Electives: EECE 670, STAT 703 (6 hours)

Embedded Systems with CS Degree

  • Technical Electives: CIS 621, 622, 721, EECE 633 (6 hours total)
  • Unrestricted Electives: EECE 431, 733 (6 hours total)

Game Design with CS Degree

  • Tech. electives: CIS 490 Gaming Theory, CIS 490 Gaming Practice (6 hours total)
  • Unrestricted electives: ART 100, 190, 200, 210, CIS 636 or EECE 636, MATH 222 (19 hours total)
  • Humanities/Social Sciences: ART 400, ENGL 461 (6 hours total)

Operations Research with CS Degree

  • CS Theory (for CS Option) or technical elective (for SE Option): CIS 575
  • Unrestricted Electives: MATH 222, IMSE 530, 560, 660, 666 (16 hours total)

Robotics with CS Degree

  • Tech Electives: CIS 530, Topics in Robotics (3 hours total)
  • Natural Sciences: PHYS 213, 214 (10 hours total)
  • Unrestricted Electives: EECE 210, 510, 511, 512, 530, MATH 222, 240 (23 hours total)

Security with CS Degree

  • Technical electives: 751 (3 hours), plus 525 for CS Option (3 additional hours)
  • Unrestricted electives: MATH 506, EECE 542, Cryptography (one of MATH 499, CIS 590, CIS 798) (12 hours total)
  • Humanities/Social Sciences: PHILO 390 (3 hours)

Systems Analysis with IS Degree

  • Technical electives: MANGT 420, 421 (6 hours total)

Web Design with IS Degree
